Long-term growing-season rainfall and evaporation are compared on a spatial basis to current wheat growing in Australia. An index, M, is defined as M = R - ¼ E where R and E are the growing season rainfall and evaporation (in mm) at a point. Remarkably, the isopleth of M = 0  is found to follow the inland limit of wheat production over much of Australia.
